Summary
Engineering Express is a nationally licensed structural engineering firm specializing in components and cladding, outdoor
aluminum systems, and wind, snow, and seismic design. We build our own software, including the ExOps operations app,
the online calculators on engineeringexpress.com, and AI tools used across the firm. We are hiring a Junior Software
Developer whose main focus is moving our engineering calculators from Excel onto our servers. You will also make
assigned improvements to our website and the EX ecosystem of tools. You will work within established systems and
standards under the technical direction of the software development team. Every change is reviewed before release, and
every calculator is signed off by a licensed PE.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
● Converts assigned Excel calculators into server-side code using the firm’s established methods. Proves each one
matches its source workbook with automated comparison tests. No calculator is released until it has been
reviewed and a licensed PE has signed off.
● Connects finished calculators to the website and certified reports, including public releases. Helps customers
who have trouble using a calculator or completing a purchase, and routes engineering questions to our engineers.
● Makes assigned improvements to the website and EX tools, including bug fixes and small changes to the client
portal and staff tools.
● Tests releases end to end in the browser and writes handoff notes for every change.
● Uses Claude Code daily within the team’s established workflow and security practices. All code is reviewed and
approved before it reaches staging.

Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field.
● 0 to 2 years of software development experience. Recent graduates and candidates with relevant internship
experience are welcome.
● Working knowledge of PHP or JavaScript, and Git.
● Required: hands-on experience with an AI coding tool, preferably Claude Code. The first step of the interview
process is a short hands-on assessment using Claude Code: rebuild a small Excel calculator in code and show it
matches, set up a simple API, and find your way through an existing codebase.
● Comfortable with Excel formulas and lookups. No engineering background is required; our engineers teach the
design methods.
● Explains what they build and why to the team, helps customers patiently when needed, and can trace any
calculator result back through the code when a number is questioned.
● Keeps AI context files current, organized, and free of passwords or keys.
● Detail-oriented: treats a single wrong number as a defect, because calculator results become engineering
documents.
● A plus: Laravel, React, WordPress, MySQL, VBA, and automated testing.
Compensation and Benefits
● Salary range:
● Health, vision, dental, and other insurance plans; flexible unlimited PTO; bonus eligibility after one year, plus
performance-based raises.
● Hands-on mentorship in production engineering software and AI tools, and a path to Software Developer as your
skills grow
